Next morning we headed to the border and in to Serbia. A few miles in was the Uvac National Park which we wanted to explore, so we found a hotel near Nova Varos, and asked about a trip. Communication was difficult, due to minimal English speakers, but we manage to book a boat trip up the river for later. We had lunch and headed down to the dam to get the boat. While waiting for the boat, there were lots of puppies to play with. Some of the information boards told us about the Griffin Vultures we would expect to see - they were down to 8 breeding pairs, but due to feeding them, there were now hundreds. Even while waiting, we saw a fair few. The boat coming in was full, but our boat was just us and a family. The family were very friendly and luckily provided us a great translation service, as the boat driver didn't speak English. The scenery was dramatic, and every now and then many vultures would fly overhead, but were tricky to photograph. As we got into the meandering section of the river - a series of dramatic S bends, we stopped and got out to look at the ice cave - a large cave that was about 8 degrees - a welcome break from the high 30s outside, full of minerals and stalagmites. We continued down the river and stopped again for a hike to the top of the canyon for a view back down the river. The view was amazing, but sadly no vultures to be seen up there. The boat headed back and we headed back to the hotel for dinner.
