The next day was the eve of National Day, a day commemorating Luxembourg, bizarrely based on the official birthday (i.e. 5 months after her real birthday, as she didn't want it in Winter), of a former duchess of Luxembourg. For some reason the eve of this arbitrary date, rather than the actual date seemed to be the big celebration day. We had some food at a cafe, then headed into town (Luxembourg is very steep so lots of climbing to get there) and everywhere was preparing portable bars on the streets for later. We did lots of exploring, and eventually found ourselves in the park hidden deep below the centre of town. It was nice and shady and we rested, then explored and found an amazing skate park, a good free outdoor gym (which was tried out), then a crazy golf course. We decided to play, and it was quite tricky. Whilst we were doing this, the speaker systems were being testing above in the town. The park, being a natural ampitheatre had amazing acoustics, so sounded like the music was being played directly to/at us. I managed to just win the golf on the last hole, then we continued into town. Eventually we headed back to the accommodation and later headed out for the evening.

It was getting busy, with people everywhere, and all the bars in use. There were many music stages, but spread out all over town, and we didn't really know what was where, so we wandered about trying to find some interesting bands. As such, it was hard to time where to be right, and we arrived at a number of stages for the last half of a song. Probably the best we found was an Eastern European sounding band, a bit like Gogol Bordello. After this, we headed to the zone marked as a good place for the fireworks. We managed to find a good spot, near the military band, and the giant flag pole. It got busier and busier, so we had timed this well. Then the music started. I'd seen many an impressive display before, but this was probably the best I'd seen. The combination of a talented military band playing, a fantastic backdrop for it, and the fireworks themselves, which were on for a full 15 minutes, made for a winning combination. After this, we found another band, and then slowly headed back, but it was clear the town was well in the party mood and would be out until late.
